Max Barros – New Artistic Director

The Brazilian Music Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Max Barros as Artistic Director for the Classical Music Department. Mr Barros is an expertise in Brazilian Classical Music and he will be the driving force to intensify the creation of Chamber Music Ensembles and the development of BMF’s Orchestra, and he will offer new initiatives in the NY music business community and throughout the country.
We are thrilled to have Mr Barros join our team at the BMF” says Madalena Sousa, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Mr Barros experience in classical music and business development will shed a brighter light on the mission of our organization in order to escalate the Brazilian Music Foundation as the number one Brazilian music school and entertainment in NYC”.
Max Barros has won wide acclaim as one of South America’s foremost pianists. Born in California and raised in Brazil, Mr. Barros was presented with the “Soloist of the Year” Award (1985) by the São Paulo Music Critics Association. The New York Times has praised Mr. Barros for his “rapturous” performance of Rachmaninoff’s music, and Opera Today remarked, “Mr. Barros… made the piano drip with beauty and elegance, with an incomparable grace in his legato.
As a chamber musician Mr. Barros has performed with the American String Quartet, Enso String Quartet, Quartetto di Venezia, Biava String Quartet, Esher String Quartet, and the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble.
For the past 15 years, he has been co-artistic director and pianist for the Ensemble for the Romantic Century, a multimedia ensemble that combines music, theater and video, with more than 40 different productions in its repertoire. He will be performing in the upcoming production Van Gogh’s Year at the Off-Broadway Signature Theater on 42nd Street, running from August 6 through September 10.
As a champion of Brazilian Music, he won the “Discovery Award” from the Diapason magazine in France for his recordings of the 6 Piano Concertos of Camargo Guarnieri with the Warsaw Philharmonic under American conductor Thomas Conlin. He is currently recording all of Camargo Guarnieri’s solo piano works in six volumes.
Mr. Barros is the founder and president of Ponteio Music Publishing, Inc, a company devoted to the publication and dissemination of Brazilian classical music.
His dedication to Brazilian music led him to meet Madalena Sousa, the Founder and President of the Brazilian Music Foundation, also a dedicated and enthusiast promoter of Brazilian music. As a result, he was just appointed as Artistic Director of the classical music department of BMF. Mr. Barros is a Steinway Artist.
Mr Barros participated at the “Alma Brasileira”, a concert celebrating 130 Years of Villa-Lobos on March 5th, 2017. This concert was produced and presented byBrazilian Music Foundation.
