Workshop details:
Brazilian music is typified by its intense and exuberant mixing of styles, from the European/African/Native American blends that brought about the original sambas of the early twentieth century to Brazilian pop music of today.
Rio de Janeiro based percussionist Mila Schiavo will present a Pandeiro (Brazilian tambourine) workshop that will cover techniques exercises and three music styles from Brazil: Choro, samba de roda and samba carioca.
The idea is to provide to the intermediate to advance percussion student new ways to practice and to adapt patterns from samba school instruments to the Pandeiro.
Workshop outline:
3:00 pm Introduction & brief history of Pandeiro
3:10 pm Stretching, holding the Pandeiro – warm up exercises
3:20 pm Explanation on sounds and exercises
4:00 pm 10 minute break
4:10 pm Brief history of Brazilian music & rhythms – 2/4 time and the “tresillo”.
4:15 pm Choro (basic pattern)
4:25 pm Samba de Roda – 2 different patterns + clap the “tresillo”
4:35 pm Samba Carioca – Patterns from the “Surdo de 3o”
4:50 pm Q + A
